Steel is the term used to refer to metallic alloys consisting mainly of iron. Steel is a mixture of carbon, several metals and other non-ferrous metals – most of which is iron. However, the terms steel and iron are often used as synonyms. The definition for steel according to DIN EN 10020: 2000-07 is most frequently applicable. Thereafter, the carbon content of the iron alloy must generally be less than 2.06 per cent; except for a limited number of chromium steels.
By means of individual processes such as alloying, heat treatment and cold forming or by combining these processes, steel properties can be selectively modified. But also by steel finishers, e.g. chromium or molybdenum, the properties of steel can change. Steel refiners are mainly used in the high-tech industries.
